5 Factors When Choosing a Cremation Urn

5 Factors When Choosing a Cremation Urn

Almost everyone at some time in their life will face the death of a loved one.  Over 50% of funerals are cremations, and by 2035 it's expected that over 80% will be cremations.  So here are some critical points to consider when buying an urn or keepsake.
Various sizes of cremation urns and keepsakes

#1. The Weight to Volume Formula
The Formula is this: 1 pound of healthy weight becomes 1 cubic inch of ashes.
If your loved one weighed 170 lbs., buy an urn that’s at least 170 cubic inches.
Most urns are 200 cubic inches - this is the standard size recommended by CANA, the Cremation Association of North America.
Almost all urns conform to this size, but there are smaller sizes available, as well as larger ones.

#2. Intended Location
If you want to keep the urn at home, you may wish to consider the urn's dimensions.
For example, for a china cabinet or shelving unit, measure the shelf height. Similarly, for a mantel piece, measure the depth of the mantel.  Or, if your family has selected a columbarium niche, ask about the interior height options, to make sure there is comfortable space for placing the urn within the niche.

#3. Disposition of the Ashes
Poppies Small Keepsake
Some families conduct a Scattering Ceremony, which can be a very healing and intimate ritual, usually attended only by immediate family and closest friends. It's noteworthy that one should check that scattering is allowed in your intended location - bodies of water, and privately owned property with the owner's permission, are usually okay.
If scattering, you may choose to keep a portion of the ashes in a small keepsake.
Or, you can put mementos instead of ashes into a keepsake, like a small photo, a lock of hair, a poem or letter.  Either with ashes or mementos, a small keepsake can make a beautiful in-home memorial.

#4. Dividing the Ashes
Another choice is dividing the ashes among family members.
If so, use “The Formula” to add up the sizes of keepsakes to hold all the ashes:
Each pound of healthy body weight = 1 cubic inch of ashes.

When family members live at great distances from one another, a keepsake for each person’s home will inspire loving memories for years to come.

#5. Your Loved One’s Personality
I've saved the best for last. To capture the essence of your loved one, consider their style and spirit. What made them happy?  What was their favorite color?  It may take some searching, but you’ll know the right urn when you see it.

There can be great comfort in having properly memorialized your loved one, by capturing their style and spirit in your choice of urn and/or keepsake.

Unique Cremation Urn for a Meaningful Memorial

A Unique Cremation Urn for a Meaningful Memorial

I began designing cremation urns, keepsakes, jewelry and pet urns ten years ago, spurred by the loss of a loved one.  My husband had lost his mother, and the search for a funeral urn that reflected her personality was less than fulfilling.

His family had no choice but to settle for one of the available offerings, which was not as meaningful as it could have been.  Since then, I’ve dedicated myself to making urn and keepsake offerings that are able to stand as expressions of a loved one’s style and persona, and inspire loving memories.  When we bid a final farewell, it’s the beautiful aspects of a life we are celebrating – we recognize all the love, commitment, effort and integrity that person has contributed to our lives, our family, friends and community.

As a lifelong collector of Tiffany-style art glass, I’ve been in love with the shimmering aura of iridescent glazes for decades.  The aura this kind of hand blown glass brings to an object, such as a vase or a light shade, inspired me to begin working with two world class glass blowers to create funeral offerings.  Producing uplifting pieces became my life’s work, and I’m so happy I chose this path.  Some of the testimonials I’ve received attest to the uplifting effect that has rippled through people’s lives.

Blue Heaven Cremation Urn
A unique urn or keepsake that aptly represents the spirit of our loved one makes a perfect focus at the front of the funeral gathering, and continues to engender warm and loving remembrance long after the life celebration is over.

I know of one family that decided to conduct a scattering ceremony with their mother's ashes, after the funeral.  This ceremony became an intimate and healing family ritual, with each immediate family member saying a few words prior to the scattering.  Now they are using the spherical top of the urn to contain a few mementos, and have engraved the brass closure with her name, dates, and a brief epitaph, to make a small and unique permanent memorial.  The most wonderful use of the vessel part of her urn though, I think, is as a vase to hold flowers, and it's present during every important family gathering.

Whether the final location of the cremation memorial urn is in-home, in a columbarium niche, or elsewhere, the essence of our loved one continues to shine on, reminding us of their unique and beautiful enduring spirit.

All best wishes,

The full sized urns are hand crafted in art glass, with a silver plated ring at the rim, and a choice of sphere top or flat top, depending on height availability in the urn's intended location. Included with the urn is a plastic liner bag, instructions for transfer of ashes, and permanent sealing silicone.

The spheres, also hand made in art glass, sit atop a solid brass stand and feature a solid brass Closure, which is finely threaded to the urn, and provides enough area for engraving with name, dates, and a few meaningful words of remembrance.  Included within each sphere is a plastic liner bag, instructions for ashes transfer, a velvet pouch and a small ziplock bag for containing mementos separately from the ashes.

Funeral Planning

Consider Writing out Your Funeral Plan for Your Loved Ones

(...and take 10% off with our Google Plus promo code: GP10)

Lots of people do some thinking about their own funeral plans.  If you’ve chosen cremation, your loved ones most likely know that this is your choice – but unfortunately not much else.

Meadow Cremation Urn
What happens when you pass away?  Grief-stricken, your loved ones start to organize a funeral with their chosen funeral home. As part of the cremation arrangements, they must choose an urn or box for containing the ashes.  At this point, while in a state of emotional distress, many opt for a basic box, with the intention of finding an urn later.  The box goes into the closet and creates a feeling of guilt, or is simply forgotten.

In some cases an urn is eventually purchased, and the funeral home will then transfer the ashes for you.  The urn may be placed in a cemetery, a columbarium niche at the cemetery or within your church, in a mausoleum, or within your family's home on a fireplace mantel, in a china cabinet, or on a shelf where it becomes a warm reminder of you, and part of the their everyday life.

Starlight Cremation Urn - Medium Size

Most funeral homes sell traditional brass urns or wooden boxes that are affordable, practical, and utilitarian.  But does it express you, your taste, or your persona in any way? As a loving gesture to your family, you could save them the stress of this decision by pre-planning and finding your own urn.  You could leave them with something to inspire warm memories, an urn that reflects your style and personality.  Your urn would then be integrated into the funeral service at the front of the chapel, providing a focus for the proceedings, after which it would become part of an inurning ceremony at the cemetery, or be embraced into your loved ones’ home as a piece of art.

Meanwhile, with this loving gesture completed, you could let your family know where it is, and use it to contain your will, a letter to your family, or any mementos you wish to pass along.  You could use it as a piece of art in your own home, and a beautiful reminder to live well and fully each and every day.  Or enjoy it as a flower vase!  In any case, when it eventually passes on to your family, you’ll know that it will be an inspiring and uplifting reminder of you that stands for your unique and enduring spirit.

To further provide for your loved ones, you could record all the necessary info that your family will need to amass upon your passing.  We have a printable page called Funeral Planning Guide, where you can easily enter all the details they must gather, and store it in a place you will make them aware of - like, for example, inside your urn!

You could ask your Funeral Professional to source an urn from our collection, by showing them our web store, or you may buy directly from us at Cremation Urns by Legacy Canada.
